What is therapeutic phlebotomy and how can I benefit from it?

Therapeutic phlebotomy (also known as a therapeutic blood draw, bloodletting, iron reduction therapy, or red blood cell reduction therapy) is a medically prescribed procedure that removes a controlled amount of blood from the body. This helps lower elevated red blood cell counts or excess iron levels, which can reduce the risk of serious health issues such as blood clots, heart problems, or organ damage.

It’s a common and effective treatment for individuals with conditions like:

Hemochromatosis (iron overload)

Polycythemia vera

Elevated hemoglobin or hematocrit

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)-induced high red blood cell counts

At OptiVena Mobile Phlebotomy, we specialize in providing at-home therapeutic phlebotomy services tailored to your provider’s specific instructions. Our experienced, licensed mobile phlebotomists coordinate closely with your doctor to ensure your treatment is performed safely, comfortably, and according to your personalized care plan.

Unlike donation centers, we don’t follow rigid donation schedules or impose limits. We follow your doctor’s orders, whether you need therapeutic blood draws weekly, monthly, or as needed. And best of all, we come to you, so you can receive the care you need in the comfort and privacy of your own home or office.

Did You Know?

Most blood donation centers have strict guidelines that can prevent people from donating, even if their doctor recommends regular therapeutic draws. You can be turned away for reasons like:

‣Hemoglobin or hematocrit levels that are too high

‣Blood pressure that’s slightly out of range

‣Body weight below a certain threshold

‣Donation frequency limits (even if medically necessary)

These rules are designed for blood donation safety, not for therapeutic treatment.

Why OptiVena is Different

We’re not a donation center. We follow your provider’s exact orders: no weight restrictions, no donation frequency caps, and no one-size-fits-all rules. Whether you need weekly, monthly, or occasional therapeutic phlebotomy, we’re here to help you stay on track with your care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Mobile Therapeutic Phlebotomy Service

  • What is therapeutic phlebotomy?

Therapeutic phlebotomy, also known as bloodletting, is a medical procedure where a specific amount of blood is removed from your body to reduce excess iron levels or manage certain blood disorders.

  • What conditions can therapeutic phlebotomy help treat?

This procedure is commonly used for conditions such as hemochromatosis (iron overload), polycythemia vera (excess red blood cells), porphyria cutanea tarda, secondary iron overload, and erythrocytosis.

  • Do I need a prescription or lab order to book an appointment?

Yes. A prescription from a licensed, US physician or qualified medical provider is required for therapeutic phlebotomy because it is a medical procedure that involves drawing blood to treat an underlying medical condition. We are unable to make exceptions to this requirement.

  • How often will I need therapeutic phlebotomy?

The frequency of the procedure varies based on your specific condition and your doctor's recommendations. Some patients may need it weekly, monthly, or at other intervals.

  • How do I prepare for a therapeutic phlebotomy session?

Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions. Generally, it’s important to stay well hydrated and eat a meal with protein before your appointment.

  • What can I expect during the procedure?

A licensed mobile phlebotomist will come to your home or office, and the procedure will involve drawing a specified amount of blood. It typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes. During the session, your vitals will be monitored closely to ensure there are no issues during your session. Your mobile phlebotomist will continue monitoring you for about 15-20 minutes after the procedure to ensure your vitals are good and that you feel well after the session.

  • Is therapeutic phlebotomy painful?

You may feel a slight pinch when the needle is inserted, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated. Our skilled phlebotomists aim to make the process as comfortable as possible.

  • Are there any side effects?

Common side effects may include dizziness, fatigue, or bruising at the needle site. Most people recover quickly and can resume normal activities shortly after, however, there are some that require extra rest after the session. Every body is different and will react differently to the procedure.

  • What are the benefits of having therapeutic phlebotomy done at home?

Home-based therapeutic phlebotomy offers convenience, privacy, comfort, reduced stress, and eliminates the need for travel and waiting in clinics. The phlebotomy can take place while you are sitting on your couch, your bed or anywhere you are the most comfortable. After the procedure, there is no need for you to go anywhere, allowing you to rest and recover in the comfort of your own space.

  • How do I book an appointment?

You can book an appointment directly on our website under the "schedule here" tab or by contacting OptiVena Mobile Phlebotomy by phone at 623-692-0527. Please remember a lab order for therapeutic phlebotomy is required in order to book an appointment.

However, you may be able to submit a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement. We can provide you with the necessary information you will need to submit this claim.

Since each insurance plan is different, we cannot guarantee reimbursement. If you have any questions about your eligibility, it is always best to contact your insurance provider for clarification.
