This is the question we get most, and the answer is yes. A signed lab order from a licensed US provider is valid here. It does not have to come from an Arizona doctor. Your physician in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, or anywhere else can write it, and we can collect on it.

A few practical things make it go smoothly. We need the order before your appointment, not at the door, because the tests listed determine which tubes we bring and how the specimen has to be handled. If insurance is being billed for the testing, the order should include the diagnosis codes, since the lab needs those to process the claim. And if your provider's office is fighting with a patient portal upload, they can fax it straight to us instead.

Getting Results Back to the Doctor Who Ordered Them

Results always go back to the ordering provider, the same way they would if you had walked into a lab yourself. We never sit in the middle of that.

Arizona is a little unusual in one respect that works in your favor. Sonora Quest is the dominant regional lab here and operates as a Quest Diagnostics joint venture, so if your provider at home routinely uses Quest, results generally move through channels their office already recognizes. Labcorp runs nationally and behaves the same way. We deliver your specimen to whichever of the two is in network with your plan, which keeps your testing costs covered the way they normally would be.

If You Winter Here From Canada

Canadian snowbirds hit a different wall, and it catches people off guard. A lab order from your doctor back home generally cannot be used at a US lab. Federal rules require the order to come from someone authorized to order tests under the law of the state where the testing happens, and Arizona ties that to Arizona licensure. There is a practical hurdle too, since US lab requisitions require an ordering provider ID number that Canadian physicians do not have. It is not a paperwork problem you can talk your way around.

Here is the part most people do not know. Arizona law lets any person order lab testing directly from a licensed laboratory, with no physician order at all. It is not limited to Arizona residents, so it applies to you while you are here. Sonora Quest runs this as My Lab ReQuest. You choose the panel and pay for it directly, we come to wherever you are staying and collect it, and the results come back to you.

The one thing to know upfront is that direct access testing is self-pay by design. Arizona law bars labs from billing insurance for a test ordered without a provider, so there is no claim to submit either way. For most Canadian visitors who are paying out of pocket regardless, that changes nothing except how simple it gets.

Standing Orders Are Where This Really Pays Off

Plenty of our seasonal clients are not here for a single draw. They are managing something that needs checking on a schedule.

Anticoagulant monitoring is the common one, and our team draws regularly for patients on warfarin across the north and west Valley. Hormone therapy monitoring is another. So is therapeutic phlebotomy for hemochromatosis or polycythemia vera, which does not pause just because you changed states for four months. We will follow your provider's order exactly as written, on whatever interval it specifies, and you get the same phlebotomist each visit rather than a new stranger every time.

Book Before the January Rush

Demand climbs steadily from October and peaks between January and March, which is exactly when appointment slots get tight. If you already know a draw is coming, getting it on the calendar early is worth doing.

Two scheduling details matter more to seasonal residents than to anyone else. We start at 5:00 AM on weekdays, which handles fasting panels before the day gets away from you. And we take Saturday appointments, when Labcorp and Sonora Quest patient service centers across the Valley are closed. If your week is full of golf, grandkids, and the reason you came here in the first place, Saturday is often the only slot that works.
